
CTE or Vocational Education, encompasses a variety of subject areas designed to prepare students for life-long learning and career paths.
Students at Automotive follow one of three programs, or majors. When you applied, you selected either the Auto Body program, Auto Technology program or Auto Business. All 9th graders start with a vocational course in their chosen field, as well as a full academic program.
Starting in the second year, students begin taking more CTE courses; in Auto Body or Auto Technology. Based on 9th grade performance, students may be selected for the NATEF Auto Technology program, which leads to an industry-wide certification. Auto Body and other Auto Tech students continue on the regular track. Students who wish to switch between Auto Business and Auto Body or Auto Technology may do so with parental permission at the end of the 9th grade year.
Automotive High School is a unique resource. We are proud to have the only singularly automotive trade high school in the Nation. We offer excellent preparation for a career in auto body or automotive technology, fields that offer fantastic pay and advancement opportunities. Today’s high-tech cars require technicians with new higher skill levels.
Automotive HS provides hands-on work experience in all grades. Our program also provides our graduates with a strong foundation for post-secondary automotive programs and for colleges.
We also provide the applied academics and contextual learning in the classroom to ensure academic success and success in the New York State Regents exams.
Automotive High School is the only high school in New York State that has achieved Master Certification in all eight NATEF/ASE automotive service areas: Brakes, Electrical/ Electronics Systems, Engine Performance, Steering/Suspension, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Engine Repair, Heating and Air Conditioning and Manual Drive Train/ Axles. NATEF is the nation-wide certification authority for automotive training programs.
Our NATEF/AYES program provides paid co-op learning experiences with automotive dealerships. We also have a new a brand new partnership with Mercedes Benz, which has resulted in upgraded shop facilities at Automotive and will enhance the learning experience for students with an internship in local dealerships.
Job availability. The automotive industry (along with infrastructure/construction, manufacturing, and health care) will have the highest demands for skilled workers by the year 2014. Over the 2004-2014 time period, demand for technicians will grow as the number of vehicles in operation increases, reflected by the continued growth in the number of multi-car families.
People with good diagnostic and problem-solving abilities, and whose training includes basic electronics and computer courses, should have the best opportunities. For well-prepared people with a technical background, automotive service technician careers offer an excellent opportunity for good pay and the satisfaction of highly skilled work with vehicles incorporating the latest in advanced technology.
